Can the O-ring sealing ring be twisted for a long time?

Jul 31,2024

O-ring sealing rings are generally not recommended to be twisted for a long time. This is because of the twisting phenomenon of O-ring sealing rings, where the O-ring twists along the circumference, which usually occurs in dynamic sealing situations and may have adverse effects on sealing performance and service life.
Firstly, if the O-ring seal is installed properly and used under suitable environmental conditions, it is generally not easy to roll or twist during reciprocating motion. This is because the contact area between the O-ring seal and the groove is larger than the frictional contact area on the sliding surface, and the resistance of the O-ring seal itself can prevent distortion. However, if the installation is improper or the environmental conditions are harsh, such as eccentricity, unequal gaps, unequal cross-sectional diameters, or large deviations in groove coaxiality, it may cause to unequal frictional forces on the O-ring over a week, resulting in excessive surface friction in some parts and causing torsion.
Secondly, O-ring sealing rings that have been twisted for a long time may be damaged, such as wear, cracks, or even breakage, which will seriously affect their sealing performance. Distortion may also cause a part of the O-ring to slide along the working surface, while another part may experience rolling, further exacerbating the damage. In addition, twisted O-rings may also lose their original elasticity and sealing ability due to excessive or insufficient local compression.
Therefore, in order to ensure the sealing performance and service life of O-ring sealing rings, long-term twisting should be avoided. During installation and use, it is important to ensure that the O-ring is properly installed and the environmental conditions are suitable. Regular inspections and maintenance of the sealing device should be carried out to promptly identify and resolve any issues. Meanwhile, improving the machining accuracy of sealing grooves and reducing eccentricity are also important factors in ensuring the reliable sealing performance and service life of O-ring sealing rings.
